Sister city committee cancels Japan trip

FAIRBANKS — Worries about radiation exposure are part of the reason a North Pole panel has canceled plans to visit its sister city Itadori in Japan this year.

The North Pole sister city committee also did not want to impose on a community that could be in mourning following Japan’s massive March 11 earthquake that triggered a tsunami and nuclear power plant crisis.

The visit had been scheduled for late May and would have been part of an ongoing exchange of ideas and cultural education that began in 1980.

Visitors from Itadori are still scheduled to visit the Fairbanks area next fall.

North Pole and Itadori groups bring students along for visits so they can learn about the different cultures.
