As sponsors of HB 22, which would ban the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, we appreciated the March 15 editorial (“Leave safe cell phone use up to drivers”), but would like to clarify one point.

The most recent version of the bill from the House Transportation Committee does ban drivers under the age of 18 from using cell phones while driving, whether hand-held or not, except in emergencies. Minors behind the wheel should not have any added distractions.

This issue is one of public safety. Eliminating a major distraction and cause of accidents will save lives and property.
