Sitka herring ready to 'roe' as two-hour announcement notice begins
The state’s fastest fishing moneymaker is on two-hour opening notice beginning today as the Alaska Department of Fish & Game has announced that the Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery is approaching harvest quality.
A new report from the Tax Foundation ranks Alaska as having the second-best business-friendly climate in the nation. However, some state business leaders think that ranking may not tell the whole story.
WASHINGTON — Alaska Airlines and its Horizon Air affiliate said Sunday they have resolved a computer outage that led to the cancellation of 150 flights a day earlier, disrupting travel plans for more than 12,000 passengers.

A weekend in Metlakatla
Traveling in Southeast Alaska in spring is always an adventure, with no guarantees of on-time departure or arrival. This is particularly true when the journey involves a bumpy crossing in a small WWII-era de Havilland Beaver floatplane. Fortunately, one windswept March evening, an experienced Promech Air pilot delivered the mail, a load of printer cartridges and three weather-delayed passengers to Metlakatla. I wobbled off the plane as daylight faded behind the wall of snow-saturated clouds.
